Over a hundred years ago, a small group of Kensington citizens gathered in the newly-built Noyes Library to form a new presbyterian church. Thus, Warner Memorial Memorial Presbyterian Church was chartered on September 19, 1893, by Washington City Presbytery. Warner is serious about following Jesus Christ through worship, music, study, service and fellowship. We seek to be creative in relating the teachings of Jesus Christ to the world. Our family of faith shares both laughter and tears as part of our mutual caring.

Today this dynamic congregation strives to offer an exciting music program, strong Christian education for all ages, and an active mission to the local community as well as the world.

Our congregation and our pastors, Kirby Lawrence Hill and Bruce Bowen, would love to have you worship with us. Two worship services are held on Sunday: an informal service at 8:30 a.m. and a traditional service at 11 a.m. A staff of skilled specialists and dedicated lay members is constantly seeking new and meaningful ways to serve God in this community. All are invited to join us in this spiritual journey. Come and see what God has done.

Warner offers a variety of educational opportunities. The primary focus is the church school hour on Sunday morning, with classes from nursery through adult. These are organized by our Christian Education Commission.

For children, there are classes designed for each developmental level. For 6th-to-12th graders, youth classes meet to discuss the Bible, current issues and preparation for church membership. Choir programs for children also are offered on Sunday mornings. Vacation Church School is offered each summer.

For adults, three classes meet Sunday morning; Women's Circle Groups meet during the week; and the pastor conducts a Bible Study one morning of the week. A Men's Breakfast and Bible Study is held weekly.

For more than 30 years Warner has sponsored the Learning Center for Young Children, a pre-school program for 2 to 4 year olds. Further information is available through Karen Murphy the Director of the Center (301) 949-2933.

COMMUNITY MINISTRY

Among the visible measures of Warner are its many outreach programs supported by the Commission to the Community, the Deacons and Presbyterian Women.

Within the church, children gather at the Learning Center for Young Children and the Baby Sitting Co-op, and adults meet for mutual support in the Recovery fellowship. Members of the congregation support the Presbyterian Home with their efforts and contributions.

Warner gives financial support to the Montgomery County Community Ministry. Through the Two-Cents-a-Meal and Deacon's Fund offerings, Groceries for Manna and the Coupon Collection program we help several programs that feed the hungry. During the winter we cook and serve meals at the Rainbow Place women's shelter in Rockville. Boys' and Girls' Homes of Maryland and Threshold Inc. are other projects we support.

The Commission to Community focuses attention on global mission as well. We help support a mission worker in Guatemala and send financial aid to project Hope Unlimited (Brazil), the Medical Benevolence Foundation, and mission workers in Nicaragua and Colombia. We belong to Amnesty International and contribute to Habitat for Humanity.

In all our mission outreach, we give "hands-on" opportunity to share a living faith, and to abide by James' words " . . . that faith without works is dead."

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN

Presbyterian Women of Warner Church enjoy numerous opportunities for learning and service. Three Circles meet on a regular basis for fellowship, Bible Study and dissemination of information from its Board, Presbyterian Women of the Presbytery, and from Church Women United. Please see the Warner MEMO for time and place of meetings.

Circles of Presbyterian Women support many on-going projects involving Circle Manor Nursing Home. Luncheons and receptions are hosted by the Circles throughout the year.

FUN AND FELLOWSHIP

A variety of fellowship experiences is available for youth and adults.

Adult fellowship groups include:

  • two supper groups (Salt Shakers and Pot-Luck) that meet monthly;
  • one women's group for creative handiworks and crafts, and another for exercise;
  • a men's Breakfast and Bible Study Group;
  • bridge groups.

Middle school and senior high groups explore self-expression through a program of the arts, retreats, mission tours and field trips which includes:

  • a fall middle school and senior high camping retreat;
  • a January winter study and ski retreat;
  • summer retreats and youth conferences;
  • mission projects such as Habitat for Humanity and Presbyterian Home.

These and many other forms of outreach to the community and congregation are attended to by our Commission on Outreach and Fellowship.

THE SACRAMENTS

The Sacrament of Holy Communion is observed the first Sunday of every month as well as on Holy Thursday and Christmas Eve. Additionally, Communion is offered every Sunday during our early service, and at our Service of Wholeness on the second Sunday of each month. Communion is taken to the housebound the first Sunday of the month and at other times on request. All persons who confess Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior are invited to receive this sacrament.

The Sacrament of Baptism is scheduled upon request for worship services. As a Presbyterian church, the Sacrament of Baptism is available to both infants and adults. Ordinarily in the case of infant baptism, at least one parent is a church member.

PASTORAL CARE

Stephen Ministry is a program of our congregation that equips lay persons to provide distinctively Christian one-to-one care to those who are experiencing all kinds of life needs and circumstances, both in our congregation and community. The Stephen Series is a lay pastoral care program in which 30 people have been trained. For more information please call the church office at (301) 949-2900.

Pastoral Counseling and Care Ministries provides pastoral counseling for those seeking couple or family counseling, treatment for anxiety or depression, guidance for issues related to major life changes such as divorce, death, etc.  Lois Clinton is the on site part-time pastoral counselor at Warner Memorial Presbyterian Church.  You may contact her at the following phone number:  1-888-626-2273 (Box 10).  Other pastoral counselors are available through the same phone number but at other locations.

MEMBERSHIP

Adult membership in the Warner congregation is possible by affirmation of faith, transfer of membership or reaffirming your original statement of faith. The Session, the ruling body, meets on the third Sunday of the month to receive new members. After meeting with the Session new members are publicly received at an 11 a.m. worship service.

Inquirer classes are held in October and February to acquaint new members and inquirers with our congregation and our denomination.

Youth are invited to participate in a series of classes held on Sunday mornings following Easter. These classes review Church beliefs and include field trips and a retreat.

Adults and youth interested in membership may contact Dr. Kirby Lawrence Hill or the church office at (301) 949-2900. A Youth Inquirers Class is held on Sunday mornings at 9:45 a.m. starting the Sunday after Easter.
